Black Bear
Spring & Fall Black Bear Hunting is available. This island of Newfoundland also has the highest densities of Black Bears in North America. Our management area has one of the highest black bear densities in the Newfoundland, partly because during the 11 year period from 1987 – 1997 the area was closed to all black bear hunting while biologists in our wildlife department did a long term study on them.
There have been bears in excess of 600 pounds recorded in our area. Hunting pressure is very low in our area because of the limited number of licenses available annually, and since we are the only outfitter in our bear management area. We have enjoyed great hunting since the area reopened in 1997. We currently run bait stations over an extended area which has ensured large bears and an ongoing high population.
Our spring season opens in mid May and runs into July, however we do most of our spring hunting during the month of June. We also offer fishing for brook trout, in season during our sprint hunt. We offer this peaceful experience to our bear hunters at no additional cost outside of the small license fee. There is only a limited number of spring bear licenses so book early. You may hunt a single black bear and then after taking your first, upgrade to hunt a second bear. Our fall black bear season coincides with the moose and caribou seasons and may be done in combination with a moose and/or caribou hunt.
